Superformance GT40 MkII

This Superformance GT40 is a MkII example that was built as a tribute to the #1046 Ford GT40 that was driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon during their victory at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The body is finished in black over a black leather interior, and power is provided by a 484ci side-oiler V8 paired with a ZF five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes 15″ Halibrand-style wheels, Bilstein coilovers, Wilwood brakes, dual 600cfm Holley carburetors, an oil cooler, air conditioning, and a stainless-steel exhaust system. The car was acquired by the current owner in 2011, and the fluids were changed in anticipation of the sale. This Superformance GT40 has 1,700 miles and is now offered on dealer consignment with spare parts, service records, an owner’s manual, and a clean Oregon title listing it as a 1966 Superformance.

The body is constructed of glass-reinforced polymer and mounted over a steel monocoque chassis with a pressed steel roof. The #1046 Ford GT40 paint scheme features black paintwork, silver racing stripes, and #2 racing numbers on the hood and doors. Additional equipment includes a “Gurney bubble” in the driver-side roof, red-finished front quick lift points, plexiglass side windows with pop-out vents, a ducktail spoiler, and body-color scoops on the rear clamshell. Scrapes are noted on the underside of the front bumper.

Gold-finished 15″ Halibrand-style wheels feature silver lips and are mounted with three-eared knockoffs. Period-style Avon tires measure 215/60 front and 295/50 rear. The current owner states that new replacement Avon tires are included in the sale. The suspension is fitted with Bilstein coilovers, and braking is provided by Wilwood calipers and vented rotors.

The cockpit features fixed-back racing seats with black leather upholstery, ventilation grommets, and Willans harnesses. Additional features include air conditioning, GT40-branded carpets and floor mats, an adjustable clutch and brake assembly, an insulated rear bulkhead, and a four-point roll bar. The dashboard is signed by David Hobbs and Lee Moody.

The three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and a row of auxiliary gauges. The digital odometer has just over 1,700 miles.

The new old stock 427ci side-oiler FE V8 was stroked to 484ci and assembled by Bill Parham of Southern Automotive in McDonough, Georgia with a Crane Competition rocker arm assembly, Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, a port-matched Ford 2×4 tunnel-wedge intake manifold, and dual 600cfm Holley carburetors. Additional equipment includes an aluminum radiator with dual fans, an oil cooler, twin fuel pumps, an MSD ignition system, 427-branded valve covers, and an Aviaid baffled oil pan. The fluids were changed in anticipation of the sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. A “bundle of snakes” exhaust system is fitted, and a spare muffler set is included in the sale. Additional photos of the underside are provided in the image gallery.
